Are you ready to embark on an exciting journey into the world of acting? Our 12 month Acting for Film & Television program is designed to provide aspiring actors with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to thrive in the dynamic and competitive entertainment industry.

This hands-on program covers the key skills you’ll need to get noticed and land your dream role, including:

  • A variety of acting techniques including specific techniques required across film, television and stage
  • Voice and speech skills including articulation, dialect, and breathwork.
  • Physical body awareness and development
  • How to effectively communicate with actors, directors, crew, audience, and with the camera.
  • An understanding of industry standards for auditions including the creation of a demo reel, voice over reel, head shots, and resume
  • The ability to analyze scripts and develop complex characters

The first quarter of the program offers a solid foundation in acting and performance. Students begin by refining their vocal skills, delving into speech mechanics, and mastering breath control and articulation. They explore script analysis, memorization, character development, and genre-specific branding. Improvisation classes nurture spontaneity and creative expression.

Students learn body awareness, integrating diverse movement techniques. Additionally, students study the techniques employed by accomplished actors in the film industry, gaining insights into genre-specific branding and the actor’s role in film preparation.

In the second quarter, students undergo specialized training to enhance their acting skills. They delve deeper into scene study, character development, and emotional depth. The curriculum also includes practical knowledge and industry insights for real-world readiness. Improvisational storytelling skills are honed, and students gain on-set expertise. The quarter emphasizes physical comedy, dance choreography, vocal control, articulation, and dialect proficiency.

In the third quarter, students continue to refine their acting skills and enhance their employability. They focus on the intricacies of acting for the camera, working on emotional depth and on-camera techniques. Students explore the application of improvisation in comedic contexts, refining comedic timing and the creation of spontaneous humour.

The curriculum integrates dance, body movement, clowning, and yoga, allowing actors to embody diverse characters and enhance their physical expressiveness. Students will learn advanced vocal dynamics, including projection, resonance, and vocal modulation.

In the final quarter, students advance their comprehension in acting, employability, improvisation, movement, and voice, preparing for successful careers in the industry. They explore advanced techniques for film and TV, honing skills in emotional depth and nuanced character portrayal.

Students will focus on ensemble dynamics and live performance hosting, as well as advanced body conditioning, holistic wellness practices, and character exploration.

Students will also consolidate their learning to create a compelling body of work for their portfolios, positioning themselves for gainful employment in the entertainment industry.

It’s always a benefit to have previous experience, but we’re happy to say that it is not a requirement for admission into this program. This hands-on program has been designed to walk you through all the skills you’ll need to succeed in this competitive industry.

What does a day in the life of an Acting for Film Television student at CAT look like?

A typical day in the life of an Acting for Film & Television student at CAT is dynamic, with classes taking place in a variety of spaces across campus. Schedules vary by quarter, but this provides a general sense of what you can expect.

If you drive, you’ll park in the designated student lot and walk through Landmark Plaza to campus. Those who choose to walk, bike, or take transit will find the campus easily accessible, with a short and convenient route from nearby stops and bike storage areas.

Your day might begin with an Acting Techniques class, where you focus on building core skills such as memorization, character objectives, and performance analysis. These sessions are designed to deepen your understanding of character development and strengthen your on-screen presence.

Between classes, you may have time to review material or rehearse with classmates in the student lounge. When it’s time for a break, the surrounding Landmark Plaza offers a range of dining options.

Later, you might attend an Improvisation class, exploring techniques that enhance adaptability, creativity, and responsiveness in performance. This is followed by Movement, where you develop physical awareness and work collaboratively on exercises such as choreography and blocking.

After classes, many students take advantage of Kelowna’s local arts scene, including live performances and events at venues like the Kelowna Actors Studio.
